The Kind, Easy Way to Harvest Homegrown Rabbits for Dinner
(Even if you don’t think you have what it takes)

Are you planning to get meat rabbits, but intimidated by butchering?

Or have cages of fryers waiting to be processed, but keep finding excuses so you don’t have to do what needs to be done?

Maybe you’ve already butchered rabbits with mishaps or less than desirable results
or lay awake at night wondering if your dispatch method is really humane…

Butchering an animal is the biggest hurdle you need to overcome to raise healthy meat for your family. It was that hardest thing for me to come to terms with. I loved animals. Could I really kill an animal that I had raised? I was nervous about processing and afraid I would do it wrong. I just wanted someone to take me by the hand and show me how to dress out a rabbit… Sound familiar?

Hi, I’m Alyssa – a Homesteader, Mom, and Meat Rabbit Raiser

I teach backyard homesteaders how to raise meat rabbits so they can confidently produce wholesome, healthy meat for their family. I’ve been raising meat rabbits for over 10 years.

Before getting rabbits, I pictured myself raising the fryers and my husband butchering them. But in reality, he worked long hours and didn’t have the freedom or daylight hours to do so.

I realized it was up to me… If we were going to raise rabbits to feed our family, I needed to learn how to butcher a rabbit myself.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone to teach me. So I watched some YouTube videos and picked a method. It looked like a relatively simple process.

I purchased a young buck from a backyard breeder for $15. He had a tumor on his testicle and a bad case of ear mites. Somehow it seemed to help knowing that the rabbit was “defective” and was already experiencing discomfort. Now I just needed to butcher it.

Butchered” is a good description of my first attempt. My YouTube education didn’t prepare me for the actual feelings that come when you take a life. They hit me like a freight train and caused me to hesitate when I needed to act. I managed to kill the poor rabbit but the resulting meat had a bit of an aftertaste (probably due to adrenaline from my botched dispatch).

I felt horrible that the rabbit suffered due to my inexperience. It took days for the feeling of trauma to diminish.

I resolved then and there that if I was going to raise meat rabbits, I needed to find a dispatch method that was fast and humane. I couldn’t bear the thought of another animal suffering needlessly at my hand.

After carefully researching scientific studies and humane techniques, I discovered that many methods people think are humane are actually the opposite.

For example, the popular “broomstick method” is not humane because the rabbit’s neck and shoulders are crushed before dislocation. Other approaches are easy to botch or require specialized equipment with price tags far outside my budget.

After some trial and error, I developed a fast, humane dispatch method that is minimally stressful for me and the rabbit. It works every time and I have never had a botched job since. The rabbit is happy one moment, gone the next. Instant lights out.

Butchering day is still hard, but now my heart is at peace knowing I can give them a fast, painless death.

After mastering humane dispatch, I promised myself that I’d do everything I could to prevent needless suffering and be the guiding mentor that I wished I had all those years ago. As such, I’ve distilled my butchering knowledge into a comprehensive course that you can complete in about an hour. No fluff, just simple actionable information.

Alyssa was a fantastic teacher teaching about something she has a ton of personal knowledge of. We all need to take more interest in the food we eat especially those of us who eat meat. Processing your own meat animals is a great start.”

The whole presentation was very organized. I can understand how a processing workshop could be overwhelming to some people, but I was completely understanding of the whole process and would have no issue processing a rabbit of my own. The printed information was very helpful to take home and review and also to use for future processing. Very well done!”

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does it take to complete this online course? Our Complete Meat Rabbit Processing Course can be completed in about 2 hours.

Can I view the course more than once? Yes. Once purchased, you have lifetime access. Many people take this course when getting started, then review it as a refresher before butcher day. You can use a mobile device to watch the step-by-step videos while processing.

How’s this course different from YouTube videos and butchering info online? This is the only complete Meat Rabbit Processing Course in existence. You can spend weeks learning online, yet miss the crucial basics of humane dispatch. Many people simply don’t know what constitutes humane dispatch. Sadly, about 80% of the dispatching videos online do not teach humane methods, and if they do, they fail to give enough info for a beginner to repeat humanely. Also, little to no info is given on how to handle the meat properly for safety and maximum tenderness. Finally, this course is taught from a place of compassion and respect, unlike many butchering videos.

Can I take the course in person at your farm? I no longer teach the full processing course at our farm in central NY. I occasionally offer hands-on processing workshops. The workshop consists of a butchering demo and the option to dress out a rabbit yourself. Cost is $50/person or $80/couple and includes a fryer rabbit to clean and take home. You must take the online course before attending. If interested, purchase the course above then contact me to schedule a workshop.

I don’t know if I can butcher a rabbit, should I still take this course? Butchering anxiety is real. I address this concern head-on with a special section to help you work through the emotional aspects of taking a life. You owe it to yourself to learn the process before making a final determination. Rest assured that you will not be subjected to brutal or inhumane images that abound on other platforms. Our rabbits are treated with the utmost care and respect both on video and off. I encourage you to enroll in the course with peace of mind knowing that I’ll refund every penny if you decide it’s not for you.

Customer Reviews:

“Thank you sincerely for the excellent course. It was just what I needed to have the confidence to go ahead and get rabbits.  I would never forgive myself if I ever hurt an animal or messed up and wasted the meat. Thanks again!” – Jani

We gained a lot out of this course. We’ve been raising rabbits for about a year and a half, and have processed a few sets. We used this course for the last set, and found it to be a really great resource. We kept the iPad on hand to follow along as we got the process down. Alyssa’s method helped answer some of the trouble spots in processing and skinning that we were unsure of. I found this to be a well-rounded, comprehensive course that included everything I was looking for. Actually, more—the information on how to use the different parts of the rabbit was great, too. I highly recommend this course for rabbit raisers, and have done so several times already.” – Mary
